Multiple reporters have compared Republicans to dogs chasing a car that they finally caught. They were PUSHING the anti-abortion car and constantly adding fuel. They aren’t stupid dogs chasing machinery. They are political operatives using a religious argument to gain power. Now that car will be going full speed in reverse spewing pollution into the dogs’ faces as it tries to crush them. ADLCC should start up some write in campaigns.
Heather Cox Richardson also has an important take on this at https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/april-9-2024?triedRedirect=true . She notes "So, in 1864, a legislature of 27 white men created a body of laws that discriminated against Black people and people of color and considered girls as young as ten able to consent to sex, and they adopted a body of criminal laws written by one single man.
And in 2024, one of those laws is back in force in Arizona.
I can't believe we are still fussing over this. Most people (women) want access to reproductive rights. Once again we have to answer telephone screamers..."What are you people doing"?????
“A big part of the reason Democrats don’t want to revert to a less-bad 15-week ban is that they feel the wind at their back, both in terms of the upcoming reproductive rights initiative to enshrine the right to an abortion in the state Constitution, and for their party at large.”
I think you’re putting words in Democrats’ mouths here. Dems (like Rep. Diaz, quoted just above this line, and the Dems quoted here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/20/us/politics/in-arizona-democrats-could-see-opportunity-in-an-1864-abortion-ban.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare&ugrp=m) have been very clear that they are not willing to risk reproductive rights and pregnant people’s lives to gain political tailwinds. Just because it’s true that Republicans have backed themselves into a political corner doesn’t mean it’s true that “a big part of the reason” that Democrats won’t settle for a 15-week ban that is still dangerous and contrary to their values is the electoral consequence.
Have we seen any move to repeal 13-3603? I think AZ leg dems should act quickly to either pass a repeal with moderate Republicans' help or pin them to the wall in their support of a total abortion ban!!!
The 1864 and 2022 AZ abortions laws appear to have made many (most?) abortions since Dobbs illegal. 1864 states no abortions unless to save the life of the mother (no urgency) . 2022 simply adds an additional condition, by stating no abortions after 15 weeks unless it is a medical emergency (NOW!), and also states that there is no 'right' to abortions, and that the 1864 still is the law of the land.
Do I read this correctly? If so, why did lawmakers allow non-life threatening abortions from Dobbs until now?? Thanks in advance for a thoughtful reply.

Now, though, women can vote."

The hypocrisy is stunning if unsurprising. The Mirror has the whole ugly reversal. https://azmirror.com/2024/04/09/this-will-be-the-abortion-election-and-republicans-are-bracing-for-voter-retribution/

Well, well, well, if it isn't the consequences of my own actions.
