One perspective on the national shift might be that the public has been in a sour mood for years. So a common perspective has been, throw the bums out. After Obama, they went forTrump. Then there was the pandemic, so voters wanted to throw Trump out. Then there was inflation (arguably largely due to the pandemic), and they wanted to throw Biden out - and Harris was still part of that administration, so they wanted to throw her out. Voters simply aren't happy.
Here, still a lot of votes to count. Coattails and this unhappiness are hurting Dems, but makeup of the legislature is still in flux.
Carville nailed it. Blame it on the economy. Chump offered hope for lower prices. Kamala said (rightfully so) things are on the right track. But, people aren't feeling it. Estimates are that 150 million of us are living paycheck to paycheck. That makes for a pissed-off electorate.
I'm not an economist (and I don't play one on TV) but I don't think the days of "cheapier prices" are ever coming back especially with wage increases/negotiated union contracts. If a McDonald's employee is make $15 an hour, the Big Mac is never going back to pre-2020 prices.
It was the economy stupid but not a word about the pandemic and how that totally plunged us into what could have been a recession if not for the economic policies of Biden/Harris. Trump killed a million to Covid with his mishandling, almost died himself and killed one of his advisors. He separated and caged children, took away women’s freedoms and health care. Now he will probably let Ukraine fall, get out of NATO, put tariffs on everything, let racism prevail, attack LGBTQ, project 2025. Trump had a 34% approval in 2021 and left the next administration with a domestic and world crisis. Harris should have at least hung Trump with the Covid mess and economic issues he left behind. I’m sorry Michelle, she had to go low. Fear and loathing was a motivator for many. We can’t forget the misogyny of Trump, Vance and many other Americans. Trump has a mandate, Electing a felon, convicted sex offender, and the leader of a failed coup is new for me.
