About money in politics: fundraising is not exactly an unmitigated good for campaigns, and particularly for candidates. While they need to have enough money for their campaign, every hour spent fundraising is an hour in which they aren't engaging rank and file voters (since they aren't calling the $5 donors). And while the totals tell us something, the number of donors is far more interesting since it implies a level of support in the candidate.
